As noted, players take on the specific role of a witcher, Geralt of Rivia. Sapkowski’s books provide a clear template for witchers and CD Projekt has decided to stay true to the source material – which means the character of Geralt is locked into being an althletic male swordfighting specialist. Not a bad thing to be by any means but don’t expect to create a sneaky diplomat or a wizened mage. In fact, there’s no initial character creation - Geralt comes complete with a face, hair (Oh, the hair!) and history.

It was mid 2003 that The Witcher was first revealed. An ambitious action/RPG based on the novels by Polish fantasy author Andrzej Sapkowski, the game promises a dark and morally ambiguous gameworld and meaningful choices. After a long development, the release date is finally approaching and CD Projekt Red and Atari have given us unfettered access to a preview copy to experience the gameplay first hand.

We take a brief look at the potion and weapon upgrade systems for Atari's upcoming RPG.
It's been well over a year since our last look at CD Projekt's ambitious role-playing game, The Witcher, which is an immense role-playing game, one that promises between 60 and 100 hours of play. As such there's an enormous amount to talk about, but I'm focusing only on what new information we have on the game: the token abilities system, potion alchemy, and mini-games.

CDProjekt's chief designer Michal Madej recently dropped in to demo the game to us, revealing a sprawling medieval-like fantasy world of villages, cities and fields that, dare we say it, felt fresh and noticeably different to worlds we've adventured in before, the environments impressive along with non-player characters not afraid to use you to achieve their own nefarious goals.

Seeing a fledgling game in the presence of its marketing team can be uncomfortable. They watch your reactions carefully and always want to know what you're thinking, preferably on a scale from one to five. The main monsters that The Witcher's team have yet to defeat are tying down the camera perfectly, and preventing their attempt at mature content ending up as the exact opposite. If they run these through with a silver sword, this could be one of the RPG surprises of the year.

Definitely. From all that we've seen and read thus far, The Witcher is could well be one of the best action RPGs coming out in a long time. Moreover, it is a very easy to learn single-player RPG, the kind of which are becoming a rarity in today's market. The only downside may be that this will probably suck the players in for days if not weeks and not release them until the game is over. But if that is the only complaint we'll have about this game when it comes out, we're in for a treat.

Another unique feature of The Witcher is that it has a fully mouse-driven control scheme. In the game there is no need for keyboard controls, even during combat. The game’s compassion /cruelty spectrum is similar to what we’ve seen in other RPGs like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic or Jade Empire, but it isn’t quite as predictable. To illustrate this, the team provided us with an example. After capturing a bandit that had attacked the secret witcher stronghold, Geralt is given several options, including a choice to simply kill the man, torture him for information, or let him ago. Each of these options is perfectly valid, but each has different consequences.

We then watched a demonstration of one of the game's moral decisions in action. In this scene, we had captured a traitorous human and escorted him to the stronghold of the other Witchers and were faced with the option of releasing him in exchange for crucial information or killing him. As Madej explained, killing the treacherous prisoner would prevent him from rejoining his comrades, who would later ambush and slay one of Geralt's best friends, while letting the man go would eventually lead to a series of events that would end with the death of his lady love.

Our favorite effect was that of drunkenness. Geralt may need to coax information out of barroom companions, and the best way to do that is to drink with them. The Witcher is a single-player story-driven RPG based upon the world created by Polish fantasy writer Andrzej Sapkowski, whose works have never been translated into English but are apparently very popular where they've been published. The game, based on the book series written by Polish fantasy author Andrzej Sapkowski, brings to life an unlikely hero, a ferociously darker world bursting with contemporary problems (such as terrorism, environmental pollution, and racism) and bleak choices that must be made in order to save the seemingly doomed surroundings players will quickly become engrossed with.

Even if, for example, Geralt chooses to spare a seemingly-innocent villager who got caught up in a raid on a village without any further questioning, the choice may have negative repercussions much later in the game when that character sells Geralt out. This is much truer to real life where a person can't simply make a choice, then hit the reset button when the world explodes as a result of his wrong selection.

It is from these morally ambiguous, 3rd-person perspective shoes that players will explore their world. And what an ambitious world CD Projekt has planned. While the overall mile count may not be initially impressive, CD Projekt has a reason for that; as one employee said in a recent interview, "In general we don't want to lie to the player by giving him square miles of empty, boring terrain - in our game we make use of every metre in order to show or say something interesting."

From the generous presentation I was shown today, considerable effort is being put into the game's backstory. In the wake of a massive war resulting in much bloodshed for both sides, unrest and chaos has gripped the world. Legions of specialized soldiers are sent out to try to quell the increasing population of demons and beasts, but even they aren't sufficient to hold their numbers. Desperate, humanity turns to an ancient group of warriors, known as "The Witchers".

While admittedly fast-paced once combat ensues, The Witcher is highly story-driven. There are over 300 cut-scenes in the game, but you don't just sit back and watch the events unfold the entire time -- you'll be forced to make several morally ambivalent decisions. In our demo, The Witcher captured a bandit and had to decide what to do with him. Kill him? Set him free? Torture him? Wait for other Witchers to arrive and discuss it with them? What makes this interesting is that your decision, regardless of what it is, has a unique and direct impact on later events.
